Frequently, clients ask what they should bring to a shoot. Should I bring a prop? Do I need to buy anything special?

Short Answer: No

Long Answer: Anything you'd love to be in your photos!

So what kind of "things" are we talking about? Things that are special to you make great props, or things that announce the baby. Here's a list of things that have made beautiful props for my clients in the past:

  • baby shoes

  • balloons (only $1 at Dollar Tree!)

  • Scrabble tiles (I can provide these)

  • a special stuffed animal

  • a baby-sized toy, like a mini basketball

  • special baby dress outfit (frilly dress, bowtie, etc.)

  • a ribbon across the baby bump

  • ultrasound pictures

  • parent's baby pictures

  • a blanket that belongs to your baby

  • family heirloom—perhaps there's a blanket that great-grandma knitted, or a toy that's been passed down for generations

  • item that relates to child's heritage

Sure, you can bring a fancy expensive swaddle or bumblebee costume and have your baby look like it came out of an Anne Geddes photo, and if that's what you want, them by all means—go for it! But in my experience it's your own personal momentos and the joy on the mother's face as she glances toward her baby that make the most memorable photos.
